THANK YOU BROOKHAVEN VOTERS
THE REFERENDUM PASSED BY 829 VOTES

On Tuesday, January 22, an amazing thing happened. The Civic community gained a stunning victory over incredible odds to defeat the forces of an entrenched "status quo" establishment. Our referendum to establish Council Districts was passed by the voters of Brookhaven. This initiative took a five year effort by Civics, Good Government Groups and the League of Women Voters overcoming enormous obstacles to get the referendum on the ballot and then was able to defend against a "fearmongering" campaign to win.

On January 22:

for a council district system that will allow you to vote for a council representative from your part of town who will be responsive and accountable to you and your community... and the issues you care about.

for improving the quality of life in Brookhaven Town by electing council people concerned with overdevelopment (growth and planning) and its tax impacts on your community.

for opening town government to representatives from across Brookhaven replacing an organization that currently does what it wants, keeps itself in power and votes as a block almost 100 percent of the time.

Unfortunately, there are now legal maneuvers to overturn the referendum. Please check Latest News. This site attempts to be a source for reference information about Council Districts and the initiative's progress.
