Council Districts & Wards
Accountable and Responsive Town Government
Long Island Towns are moving toward a more responsive and accountable form of Government. It is only a matter of time before all the larger Towns adopt this structure of government that allows the residents of a Town to know their representatives.
Some years ago most people on Long Island felt that something was wrong. They saw overdevelopment problems and sensed that their Towns were unresponsive. They didn't know who their representatives were. Their government was anonymous.
What we are doing in Council Districts is to fundamentally change the system, diminish the power of Central Party machines and return it, as much as possible, to the people and to the local party rank-and-file. Government is complex and the decisions are not simple, however, if we put in office at the Council level representatives that are "their own people" and not a controlled pawn of a party boss, we will have a chance to make the system responsive.
There are "grass roots" groups of mainly civic and good government volunteers that have worked long and hard to get this reform issue on the ballot in the various Towns. If you don't already have Council Districts take this opportunity to do something important and help these efforts. For obvious reasons, these efforts are always opposed by the entrenched status quo forces of whichever party is in power. Once Council Districts is implemented, all parties and forces that opposed the initiative, consider Council Districts to be great.

Other Towns Easthampton, Babylon and Huntington are all engaged in moving towards Council Districts. Very early initiatives in Southhampton and Oyster Bay met defeat. Often money was depleted during legal battles and none was left to educate voters. Their propositions were defeated. |
